Postgraduate degrees have long been seen as the lifeblood of the modern world.
Yet, it’s also become increasingly difficult for students to get them, particularly when the jobs available are so limited.
Now, we’re witnessing a massive rise in demand for postgraduate degrees.
That’s the view of David Cuhk, who has been writing about the industry since 2006. His book, Postgraduate Diploma: What You Need to Know About the Industry and Its Future, will be released in March 2018 and is already attracting plenty of interest.
He says the trend is about to get even more intense.
“We’re going to have to start looking at what are the best postgraduate courses in order to meet the demand,” he told The Huffington Post Australia.
“What are the students’ priorities?
What are the jobs that are available to them?”
It’s a question that’s on everyone’s mind as the job market continues to be squeezed.
A recent report by the Australian Council of Postgraduate Schools found that only 4.5 per cent of postgraduates were able to secure jobs.
There’s a lot more demand than supply.
Cuhk says the industry is already having to change its business model to cater to the demand for new graduates.
This means students are spending much of their time studying.
For example, postgrad students are studying more than ever before.
And while there’s been a significant rise in the number of people who have studied for a postgraduate degree, there’s a huge gap in the numbers of students studying for a degree in the profession itself.
As a result, there are a number of postgraduate graduates that have no interest in becoming postgraduers.
That’s because they’re not interested in going into postgraduate education as a career.
They want to focus on their first jobs, which are typically in the retail sector.
So, Cuhks thesis was to try and bridge that gap and give students a better idea of what to study after completing a postgraduate degree.
It’s been quite a journey for Cuhs graduate.
Over the years, he’s learnt a lot about the profession and what it is, and how to use it to his advantage.
In the past year, he has been involved in a number community projects.
The latest project was a project where students were able see the effects of climate change on their community.
With the new academic year set to start in March, Cuff has already completed his dissertation on climate change and how it affects local communities.
When he came across the issue of post graduate degrees, he says he was inspired by his students.
Many of them were so passionate about learning about their future, and the importance of doing so, that they were able make a difference in their community by doing postgraduate work.
Now, Cushk says it’s about time for the industry to be able to attract new students, and offer them a career that pays a lot.
