The postgraduate student who has made headlines since she graduated from U of T with a bachelor’s degree in psychology will soon be a full-time job.
Lorna Dube, who works as a research assistant in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, says she’s “so excited” to be working with a company called The Psychology Institute, and to be able to teach.
“I’m really excited about working for a company that’s going to provide me with a better opportunity,” she said.
Dube was accepted to U ofT as a part-time grad student in spring 2016 and says she had “a pretty good year” after graduating.
She said she’s currently working at an international marketing firm and wants to become a full time student, and hopes to graduate in June.
“It’s a huge opportunity,” Dube said.
“You have to be in the right place at the right time and the right environment to have a successful career.”
She’s a part of a group of more than 200 students from around the world who graduated in 2016 with degrees in psychology, neuroscience and other fields, and said she hopes to continue her studies and contribute to the future of psychology.
Dubes, who has spent her entire career in the field, said she had no idea how her decision would affect the rest of her life.
“Everyone said it would be like a big life or death situation,” she recalled.
“They were like, ‘Oh my god, you’ve got to go to grad school right now,'” she said, noting she’s not sure if her work will have an impact on her life at the moment.
But Dube says the company, which is looking for part-timers to help them work in the U.S., Canada and other countries, will be a “huge help” for her in the future.
The psychology graduate says she has had an overwhelming amount of support from colleagues in the community, who have offered to support her and her family financially as well as through her blog.
“All I can say is thank you,” Dubes said.
But she said she will also be working in her spare time, such as helping out with her personal projects.
“We’re working on this project, we’re trying to make this thing a reality,” she added.
“If I don’t have the resources to support myself financially, what do I have?
It’s just really challenging.”
The company says it has been hiring part- and full-timer grad students since 2018.
“The Psychology Institute has a clear vision for the future,” a spokesperson for The Psychology Instituiton wrote in an email.
“Our team of experts in psychology and neuroscience are constantly recruiting and training new and enthusiastic grad students to join our team.
The Institute will continue to work closely with our alumni to support them and provide them with the opportunity to contribute to a future of exciting scientific discoveries and societal change.”
Dube also said she was interested in applying to other universities to further her studies.
“There’s so many opportunities out there for people to get into psychology and science and technology and it’s so much more than just a job,” she wrote.
“Its a way to really contribute to society, and I think it’s really great.”
